Turkey weekend…
The long weekend is upon us and I have stuff to do so I am going to try and keep this short:
If there wasn’t a good reason to forget about ASP.NET – there is now. The problem: just by putting different characters in the URL you can get around the password protection of some/most ASP.NET web sites. The fix is a rebuild of the site, in some cases not a bad idea and in others that could be days to weeks of work. The specific flaw aside, why has it taken so long to report this problem to the masses? The slashdot conversation is entertaining.
Now for something cool from Microsoft: Page Layout Drives Web Search.
On the theme of web page design there are:
- 10 things i hate in a web site, he really should look at the site he published this on
- Please make me think, in short.. Should you, as a designer, be bound by some ethical mantra to make your work deeper, more thoughtful and complex, not aimed for the lowest common denominator of your user base?
- Ignoring information needs looks at interoperating information on users of your site. Demographics aren’t everything.
- a great Introduction to Using Patterns in Web Design.
I am not entirely sure about this article but Reading Between the Lines is an interesting look at the results of research done on the Rochester Institute of Technology site.
Technomasochism explores the odd sense of enjoyment people get from overcoming difficult interfaces. I would say the same hold true to web designers/developers. Think of that impossible problem that you find a solution to and how it feels so good.
Hope everyone has a safe and fun filled long weekend
